I just totally deleted my entire comment so I could make a blog post about it. XD
Why are you working six days this week? Aren’t you supposed to be PART time?! (;
Eye luff u!
After having to wade through the total mess that is our f#@í up tax code, I was investigating different tax proposals that I could find around the internet. All of them… ALL OF THEM… are a better plan than what we have now. Though they are far from perfect. My biggest complaint against the “Fair Tax” is the double tax that will ensue from people who have money in savings or retirement. They already paid taxes on that money, but if we switch to a consumer spending model, they’ll be taxed AGAIN when they buy stuff. That’s more than a little unfair, and needs to be figured out.
Gas prices totaly suck. It costs me between $60-$70 to fill my tank also, but it will last me six weeks since I’m not driving much anymore either.
U.S. taxes are totally confusing to me. I’m glad I’m a Canadian!
Don’t you have those new hydrogen powered cars in Cali?
I hear you though on the price of petrol. I have to fill up about once a week and that is nearly £40.00
It’s getting to the point where contemplating a medium length journey means factoring in the cost of petrol!
It’s a shame really because a car is one of the few class free, liberating things you could do. Whether driving a Bentley or a beat up chevy you can still jump in and drive across the country if you want to. Unless we feel alternative fuel it will soon become the privilege of the rich.
Over here as well as the tax on the petrol, we have separate car tax (about £170 a year) plus tax on our car insurance and then they contemplate bringing in road tolls to charge us to drive on the roads that we’ve already paid for being built!!!
I’m in the exact same boat (or car, actually( that you are. It costs almost 80 bucks to fill up my car and when I am driving on the streets, that HEMI engine burns it faster than a crack whore on the pipe.
I’ve become all boring going my 2.4 miles to work and back and maybe to the corner grocery store, haha.
Oh how I feel your pain!! I drive an Expedition, and even here in GA, it costs me about $80 to fill’er up! I have a heart attack and die a little every time! So far, it’s not hurt us too much in the wallet, since hubby only drives about 6 miles (one way) to work, and he doesn’t always do that every day. (Truck driver, goes out of town, gone for days. Sometimes.) BUT, we’re fixin to move (If we EVER get to closing on the damn house! - that’s another story, entirely) and that drive will be 15 miles one way! This freaks me out a little! Ok. A LOT!
We only have one car, and I really don’t go anywhere, except my diabetes doc every 3 or so months, and some occasional errands, so hubby just takes the car. ‘Sides, it’d cost a LOT more for me to take him, then have to go back and pick him up, if I don’t even need the car. If something comes up, and I REALLY need it, I have my son take me to my car so I can get it, and then when I’m done, he’ll follow me back, and then bring me home. Hubby comes home at all hours of the night, and I don’t see so well at night, so that is why we do things this way. Especially if I don’t need the car, what’s the point of wasting all that gas! So, with us moving, well, I’ll be doing even less of that! Things will just have to wait, and/or hubby’s just gonna have to leave a bit earlier to do some things!
I really don’t understand the price of gas! When I moved here from Cali, in June ‘98, it was $.79 a gallon. Yes, SEVENTY NINE CENTS. Cali hasn’t seen those prices since 1978 or 1979. I still remember that, and they were bitching about that price, way back then! LOL Cali was $1.49 a gallon, when I left. That’s about 1/2 the price of GA. Now, Well, I think it was $3.25 when I last saw the prices on Sunday. Who knows what it is today! Not sure what Cali’s price is, but I know we’re not too far behind, anymore. Guess GA is trying to keep up with Cali? *shrugs*
Taxes. We did those in the beginning of Feb. and had our return in about 10 days, from the IRS, I think it was. State took a couple days longer. Got a decent chunk, too, for a change! About $4700.00 total. YaY! But, a good chunk of that went to get caught up on past due bills, cuz the last quarter of last year SUCKED beyond all recognition. The rest went to the house we’re buying. Hubby did get himself a laptop. He deserved to get himself something! He works HARD for that money! :0) The money that taxes take $30,000+ of during the year! GAH!
Pandora: Was it THAT long of a comment? LOL
Dave2: But we’re already taxed on money we save. My father-in-law tells us of his taxes that he has to pay for getting money from his various places he’s put money. He has 3 sources of his income...retirement from the Navy...retirement from UC Berkeley and Social Security. He always has to pay quarterly and he only draws out $40K per year. And you’re right..anything is better than the horseshit tax codes we currently have.
Jen: It will last me quite a while since I don’t do much either...but still. Ugh. I’m glad I’m American so I don’t have to pay THAT MUCH in taxes.
Payne: I’m sure there are. I don’t want one though.
I would d-i-e if I had to use that much in one week. Goooood. (I’d prefer the Bentley, thanks...convertible...I’ve already picked it out.) We have all those taxes here, too. Only our car tax (in California) is tied to the price of your vehicle. I won’t get into how much I hate road and bridge tolls. They make me want to scream. I mean, c’mon. The damn Golden Gate Bridge toll is $5 a car. Ugh.
Hilly: Giiirrrrrrrrrrrl....you need to getchoo a less powerful car for driving your 2.4 miles. LOL I thought about getting a Mini convertible.
mizladytaz: Yeah, I remember those days when it was sooo much less expensive. I also remember I was a poor college student then so it was still expensive. Now I’m not a poor college student and it is farking outrageously expensive! I think the price is $3.97 at our station.
And the only way that we are saving ourselves from getting dinged with a huge tax bill is from our mortgage interest payments. Last year we paid $17,000+ in mortgage interest. It is our only real deduction since I refuse to squeeze out puppies for the sake of a deduction. We refinance our house every 3 years which always gives us the maximum mortgage interest deduction. Sure, the amount goes down, but the first three years that you pay your mortgage, you’re mostly paying “interest” so we’re trying to suck that dry as much as we can.
We’re taxed, uh, HOW many times on everything we do? Every time money changes hands, it’s taxed. But the price of gas is ridiculous. We should have all fuel efficient cars by now, but we’re told “people don’t want them, they don’t have enough power”. Who are these people? And why does my speedometer go to 160 mph? I don’t need to go 160 mph and neither does anyone else.
I like your idea of getting taxed on what we purchase, but it makes too much sense to be seriously considered by lawmakers.
I drive about as much as you & hadn’t put gas in my car in over a month. Tonight I put $25, it was $3.79 a gallon! I cannot imagine how it must be for people who actually commute a reasonable distance. Sheesh.
i dont get gas prices. they raise prices on gas, that has been under the ground of the gas station for a month. that gas cost xxx amount a month ago, and now your profiting xxx more cents a gallon on the same gas that cost xxx a month ago. its a rackett!
THAT is what should be illegal.
Don’t even talk to me about the price of gas.
Or taxes.
Blech. I hate the govt.
Down here we’re around $1.46 per litre. When you convert that to gallons and US dollars it comes out to US$5.50 per gallon.
Solution: drive smaller cars and drive less.
Last time a bush was in office the price of gas climbed almost to record highs. Clinton took office and overnight they dicovered there’s too much oil and the market bottomed out. Another Bush in office… record highs… who will be our next Clinton?
amen and don’t get me started!! i’ve put $75 in gas in my car in the last week and a half. i drive a cavalier. swear to god, this keeps up and i will get one of those converters for my engine (or gas tank or where ever it goes) and start bumming used cooking grease from area restaurants and NEVER BUY GAS AGAIN!! this better be the FIRST thing whoever i vote into office changes (and yes, whoever i vote for will win). and the upping the price 20 some cents during the day? seen it happen many times now. i get a little stabba stabba stabby myself when it happens. bastards!
annie: I need to go 150mph on the 5 when I’m driving over the Grapevine at 3am. heh. Other than that, no we don’t need superpowered cars.
jane: I don’t use much fuel either in my car. The only time I drive any distance is when we go to hockey games.
mon: Dood, they just arbitrarily raise prices whenever they want. HATE.
J.: Me too. Let’s start our own. :D
Dave: Is that price per US gallon or Imperial gallon?
Damon: It better not be that crazy woman Clinton.
robin: but anytime the government gets involved in something, it becomes a giant clusterfuck. And dood, those french fry cars (I live in the SF bay area so we have a LOT) always make me hungry for french fries and chinese food. LOL!
